The landscape architecture of TRON Lightcycle Run at Magic Kingdom is designed to transport guests into the digital world of TRON while fitting seamlessly within Tomorrowland. The design features sleek, modern lines and minimalist elements that echo the high-tech, futuristic theme.

Grid-Based Landscape Architecture

Perry Becker Design was contracted by Walt Disney Imagineering to provide area development design services for Tron Lightcycle Run. Although the focus is on technology and futuristic design, the landscape incorporates carefully selected low-maintenance plants to soften the hard, metallic features. The greenery adds a natural texture and organic contrast to the sleek architecture. The plant palette complements the modern aesthetic, ensuring the area feels futuristic yet grounded in its environment.

Curves of the Future: TRON’s Iconic Canopy and Seamless Design

One of the most iconic features of TRON Lightcycle Run is the curved canopy that covers the queue and launch area. This “Upload Conduit” not only provides shade and shelter but also serves as an architectural landmark that blends form and function. The pathways leading to the attraction are designed to enhance guest flow while maintaining the futuristic theme. The landscape architecture, from the plantings to the canopy, ensures the attraction is integrated into Tomorrowland’s aesthetic while offering an immersive TRON experience.

PROJECT STORY

Inside the Grid, Outside the Theme

At TRON Lightcycle / Run, the past and future collide. While the Walt Disney World Imagineering team drew inspiration from the Shanghai attraction, several adaptations were required for its Florida debut. Notably, the Walt Disney World Railroad, a vintage steam train attraction dating back to the park’s opening in 1971, ran through the site. To accommodate this, the building site was raised about 10 feet, allowing the train to pass beneath and through the ride.
