Pinnacol African
Penguin Point
Perry Becker Design was tasked with providing design services for the African Penguin Habitat at the Denver Zoo. This project involved rehabilitating the existing Kopje Formation, located at the zoo’s main entrance, to create an improved habitat for the penguins.
Penguins in Motion: Catch the Wave!
A key feature of the new habitat is an interactive wave generator, which adds a dynamic element to the environment, allowing visitors to better understand the penguins’ natural surroundings. Additionally, the immersive encounter area gives zoo guests a unique opportunity to engage with the penguins in a more personal and educational way.
Porpoising Penguins
The habitat also includes a stunning split-level view of the 40-foot-long pool, which showcases the penguins’ natural porpoising behavior. This feature enhances both the penguins’ well-being and the visitor experience, making the exhibit a memorable highlight at the zoo.

PROJECT STORY
Kopje to Coastline
One of the main goals of the project was to preserve as much of the existing structure as possible while ensuring a striking transformation. The design team worked carefully to minimize unnecessary rework, focusing on enhancing the space in a way that aligns with the zoo’s broader conservation efforts for the African penguin species.
